Ascent Trip ReportI left my house in the Dallas area just before 7:00 am and drove 8.5 hours to arrive at this high point around 3:00 pm. Google maps takes you right to the top, no problems. My original plan was to hike from the beginning of the dirt road and back. Upon arriving I decided to drive up to the top instead and see if it was worth my time to hike it in the cold and rain. It wasn't. Once I got to the top I decided to stay, no need to walk up and down the road and I couldn't find any trails to increase my interest.
At the top, there is a plaque on a boulder to mark the high point. There is also a mailbox that serves as the holder for the register. I signed it. And there is a highpointer bench, very considerate but I didn't take a seat. I spent about 20 minutes at the top taking photos, walking around and trying to discover a view of anything. I believe you can hike thru the woods on the other side of the hill but it is private property. Unfortunately, there were only limited views. The area is very wooded and it was cloudy. So, I was off to my next stop. I am glad I knocked this off the list but wish it was more interesting. There is no hiking reason to come to this mountain other then it is a state high point.
On my way to Birmingham from this high point, just down highway 72, I stopped at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. This was a pretty fun way to occupy an hour. I recommend it. It is also near the Natchez Trace Highway which looks like a really awesome way to see Mississippi. Maybe I will come back on my next tour of Mississippi and explore it. |
