Ascent Trip ReportTraining trip the day after we went to Exum School for rock climbing and rapelling training and before the Buck Mountain climb (assisted with guide). We were honored by the training as Exum gave us one of the best known guides in the area (and part owner) Rod Newcomb. I would guess he was 70ish but could climb as nibble as can be. In later years I learned from other guides out in California that he was a very well known and respected mountain guide all over the west.
We did this particualr climb to warm up and acclimate to high altitude. Route chosen had some difficult talus (and we should have worn helmets for protection) and lose rock class 3 scrambles near the top. Some dangerous rock tumbled down near our other party members as we picked a path through the tough slope. Holder and I climbed out on a class 4 pinnacle for some stunning shots. The pinnacle was too small to safely stand as the pics shows.
Base Camp was around 10,000 feet by a creek.
Backpacking trail coming in was around 6,800 feet climbed with packs to set up base camp at 10,000 then climbed several peaks with day packs as described. 3 miles in backpacking and 3 miles out and 5 miles of total mountaineering with day packs for this part of the trip. |
