Ascent Trip ReportSecond Route Up #2: North Trail:
Backpacking mini trip to teach boys how to climb with backpacks and filter water. Circled the island using the trail to Hardscrabble Point and then ascended Kineo from the rarely used North Trail (from hardscrabble)then decended using Indian Trail.
The backside approach is by far the least interesting in terms scenery. But that is all relative as the woods and lake are always fun to see - just far less cliff views and historic structures to see. It is very steep approach but has few rock formations to go scramble out on and they are hard to find. The winter is rough on the trails and the State and locals folks do not take the time to clear this trail often so it often has many downed trees in the path.
On our trip it rained the entire time so the boys got an education on keeping warm. The mountain is steep with few saddles and we wanted to camp somewhere we woudl do not damage, not be seen, and out of the way, we found a tiny grassy opening near one of the historic USGS markers that is now off trail and camped the night. |
