Ascent Trip ReportOn our way back from Mt. Kato, I surprised Katrina by pulling off of the highway. She realized pretty quickly that we were moments away from the highest summit in our home state of Iowa. Unfortunately, she was underwhelmed. We parked on the access road by the house to allow ourselves a couple feet of gain. The last time I was here was when the farm was still a farm, and many of the new features and markers were not there yet. It's nice that the Highpointer's Club has preserved the land in the form of a park, but it was a shame that the feeding trough was taken out because it symbolized the practical use of this land and the history it has been through. Part of the appeal of highpointing to me is seeing the country and it's differences and if every one was a park with a bench and a grassy area, it would simply reinforce the "Anywhere, USA" generalizations and suppress our current and historical cultural practices.
Anyway, we took our pictures with the Grant Wood look-through painting and the summit monument stone in the cold gloomy air. It was totally overcast and almost everything was grey. There was anywhere from 0"-16" of snow on the ground due to drifting with the deepest parts being right next to the top. We went up the observation deck on the silo, then headed back to the warmth of our car and headed for home.
