Ascent Trip Report

Late start on Graham Summit, and almost went for it, but opted to turn and pick up the easy Plain View instead. The time was just too late in the afternoon and with still another ca. 2 miles round trip to go to Graham I didn't want to end up hiking out in snow up to 32 inches deep in the dark. Only a few sections of FR 507 were without snow so snow shoes and poles were used almost the entire way. On top of that, I had forgotten to grab the snow baskets for my trekking poles before leaving home. So I was only able to average around 2.4 mph (24:42/mile) trekking speed, which was dependent on snow conditions and how the shoes were reacting. Several areas were soft which caused the shoes to sink deeper, thus slowing down progress. Other areas had light frozen crust which helped speed things up. Did a few short sections x-c to cut corners and the final push to summit from the FR 507 was via the SW slope. All in all a beautiful day and I was glad to bag my first 10K of 2016, even if only a side-step consolation peak. I'll return for Graham soon and definitely get an earlier start next time.
