Ascent Trip ReportDay 1, Saturday 6 Feb, 2016: Arrived in Mexico City at 1 AM, picked up the rental car (an economy Jeep Patriot) and drove to Nevado de Toluca. The national park entrance fee was around 30 pesos per person. Around 4 AM at 12500 ft (3810 m), we parked the car on the side of the road and blew up our air mattresses. We slept for about 4 hours in the back of the car before being woken up by the increasing number of vehicles driving up the mountain. At 8 AM we drove up further, parked around 13580 ft (4140 m) and started our hike to the summit via its north ridge. At one point, we put crampons on for a short section up some snow. It was a fun scramble up and down the ridgeline, but I was very much feeling the effects of the altitude, especially just having come from sea level, and I threw up around 14500 ft (4420 m). Afterwards, I felt much better and continued onward to the summit. It was a Saturday, and there were many people on the mountain, including a couple of dogs at the summit! First time I've ever seen that before. Connor reached the 15350 ft (4680 m) summit before me; I arrived in 4 hours 30 minutes. After a half hour on the summit, we decended via the snowy northeast face and navigated around the west side of the larger lake, Lago del Sol. We had to gain some altitude to cross a saddle before returning to the car, with a descent time of 2 hours. We drove down the mountain, went to Walmart to get a half a dozen 6 liter water bottles, had delicious pozole at La Casa de Tono in the World Trade Center, and found a cheap hotel to sleep at in Chalco, southeast of Mexico City. Today was a great start to the trip, with some serious acclimatizing over our 5 mile round trip hike. |
