Ascent Trip Report

Flew in to Mexico City at 1am, rented a car and drove to the park. Paid the admission fee early in the morning (a guard was sleeping in the hut), and pulled off the side of the road around 12,000 ft to sleep. We awoke to a constant stream of cars passing us by 8 am. We got up and followed them up to the parking area near the end of the road. Since this was on the weekend, there were already hordes of cars parked up high. We found a spot partially off the road maybe 1km from the dedicated parking area. From there, we took a use trail up to the saddle and traversed to the summit via scrambling around the crater ridge. There was maybe one section with mild exposure, but easy enough to down climb. The traverse is simply long. We did learn upon reaching the true summit that the quickest descent is via the slope from the saddle just north of the summit. That descent was fun since there was just enough snow to plunge step or very carefully glissade down.
