Ascent Trip ReportExcellent hike on a perfect weather day (low- to mid-70s). I hike on special days, like Valentine's Day, for my wife Brooke (who passed away from melanoma in October 2014). Brooke made it one of her goals to hike the top 100 peaks in and around SD, but cancer prevented her from finishing. So I am taking up the mantle for her.
This was a well-marked and pretty well-maintained trail across the board. I had a little difficulty finding the trailhead, but that was more a result of consulting multiple different sets of directions for getting there, each of which started from a different vantage point. There were numerous options for getting to the peak and down/around for other enjoyable hiking. I took Lower Descanso Creek to Upper Descanso Creek, bagged the peak on Oakzanita Peak Trail, then descended via Oakzanita, to East Mesa Fire Road. On the way down, I passed options for Oak Trail and Harvey Moore Trail, but had already done nearly 9 miles for the day and had some other things to do. All in all a fantastic day on the trails, where I was often alone but did see one family of three, one couple out for a Valentine's Day hike, and one large group of campers finishing an early morning ascent. Total time out and back was slightly under 3 hours.
