Ascent Trip ReportNew route.
There is apparently a trail up this peak. It is quite round-about. 12km from the trailhead to the summit. I ascended over Carnegie and then up the slabs on the east side of the summit cone as they are solid. The last push to the top was on loose volcano scree - ugh... I descended the trail. It is very well marked and mostly follows an old jeep track. Yellow and red arrows and posts point the way up. White posts and arrows point the way down. I encountered a Tuscon-based group on the summit. I knew that they were there because one of them had remained at the trailhead with their injured dog. They told me about the trail.
The gate hours remain 9am - 5pm for entering the park. However, if you remain past 5pm, you can still exit. The rangers live at the entrance. 60 pesos entrance fee.
I arrived at the gate at 8:50am and was on my way in under 10 minutes. From the entrance, it is 2.4 miles to the left turn to Cono Rojo, then follow the road 18 km to its end. Pavement to trailhead took about 1 hour of driving. Ascent time was 2 hrs 19 min. I spent at least 30 minutes on top talking to the other group. Descent was 2 hrs 3 min. When I returned to my truck, the temperature gauge said 95 degrees - ugh! It's February!! I couldn't even imagine this place in August! I drove a little way down the road away from the Tuscon group and stripped naked on one of my rubber floor mats and used my big water jug as a shower to rinse off. It felt amazing! The drive home took 7 1/2 hours with a 45 minute stop in Sonoyta for a late lunch/early dinner. The border crossing at Lukeville had no wait.
