Ascent Trip Report

A visit to 5 areas in 2 different counties .... perhaps 1 mile of hiking, 2:40 hours total time including the driving.

We did the ECTOR COHP (3 areas) and the WINKLER COHP (2 areas) with one trip inside a huge Wind Farm, basically a drive-up with short jaunts to the respective areas. Rare in Texas to find ungated roads to these types of installations.

The Main Access Road is located on the north side of Hwy #302, 1.8 miles east of the Winkler/Ector County Line (31.91430,-102.76949). The ungated entrance is signed "Duke Energy", "Sword Facility". We zeroed our odo. We felt little risk, but one does need luck when on private property.

00.0M ... left Hwy #302 northbound on the N-S Access Road in ECTOR COUNTY.
00.2M ... turned left onto a wide Service Road for the wind farm, signed "No Oil Traffic allowed". The road heads west a short distance then bends generally north (servicing the different Wind Turbines).
02.3M ... crossed cattle guard, immediately left is ECTOR COHP, AREA 3(31.93484,-102.78939), the area appears to have been worked, nothing here.
02.5M ... Turbine #90 is on the left, southwest of it at 50 yards is a high bump which I believe is not natural.
02.7M ... parked at a pipeline right-of-way, to the left at 200-300 yards is the highground for AREA 2(31.93734,-102.79666), hopped fence on-route, rough area, nothing obvious.
03.1M ... parked on road side just before a left bend (31.94102,-102.79894). AREA 1 (31.94314,-102.79745) is to the north at 300+ yards. Stomped the area everything is soo subtle. 50 yards north is an E-W road leading to an Oil Well with tanks at 75 yards west. THIS COMPLETES ECTOR COUNTY, we continued driving north.
05.6M ... main JCT (31.96892,-102.79815), The WINKLER COUNTY LINE IS IMMEDIATELY LEFT OF THIS JCT, we turned left.
08.5M ... turned left (west) immediately after xcrossing a cattle guard (31.99079,-102.85564). Straight ahead (north) we could see a number of buildings (presumable the main business facility and the place for permission). The only vehicles we met on this trip were 2 Fedex trucks, both going to this facility.
10.1M ... road JCT at Turbine #48, stayed left.
10.4M ... road turns left (south) at Turbine #50, immediately left on the right is AREA 1 (31.99110,-102.86129)) at 100+ yards. A mile+ west on a spur ridge is a tall Communication Tower. Nice views through this area.
10.9M ... pass a Microwave Tower on left.
11.4M .... summit of AREA 2(31.98017,-102.85827), capped with the road and Turbine #63.

We backtacked to the #302 without seeing no one, except for passing the 2 FedEx Delivery Trucks. I should note that we xcrossed a number of fence lines with cattle guards on-route, evidence that the wind farm is in different ranches.

From here we went southwest to a Pecos Hotel for the next 2 nights, for an unusual relaxing afternoon. We would find that there is not much doing in Pecos.

"WE DON'T LET OUR HAIR GROW LONG AND SHAGGY LIKE HIPPIES IN SAN FRANSCISCO DO.
I'M PROUD TO BE AN OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE, A PLACE WHERE EVEN SQUARES CAN HAVE A BALL. .......... merle haggard, okie from muskogee
