Ascent Trip ReportLeft the Bay Area at 3:50a on a Saturday with the intent to hit the trail by 7a and be back at the car before 10a. From past trip reports, I wasn't sure whether I'd run into angry homeowners or welcoming ones--or whether anyone would even care about my presence. For that reason, I wanted to start early and end as quickly as possible.
Arrived at 6:40a, happily ahead of schedule, yay. Parked at the end of Pinewood Way (38.813580, -122.716498), off to the right near an old red truck that doesn't look like it's moved in 10 years. Several nearby houses within a stone's throw of where I parked. Actually wasn't sure if it was even okay to park where I did, so I left a note with an apology and noted my return time in case anyone got annoyed at my car's presence. Last thing I'd want to do would be intrude into someone's personal space.
If I were to do it again, I'd probably have parked near the north intersection of 175 and Maple Shadows Dr (38.813467, -122.711767) and walked from there. One note--Maple Shadows Dr actually crosses 175 at two different locations. You want the northern-most intersection, not the southern one.
Gate at the trailhead had been knocked off its hinge and lay on the ground on the left. Open gate? Works for me.
The old jeep trail quickly becomes non-jeep-friendly due to a lot of washout and large trees that had fallen across the path. The obstacles wouldn't be good for jeeps, but they pose no problem for the lowly hiker. Navigation is simple. Just follow the path up.
Summit of Cobb East consists of a boulder about 15ft high. Not many good holds. I used the tree on its north side (photo shows the opposite side) to scramble to the top.
