Ascent Trip Reporta road and xcountry hike .... 5.6 miles, 2:45 hours RT total.
We came here equipped with Bob Packard's TR and only a copy of the satellite image of the area, confident this would be a cake walk and I wouldn't have to add a TR...... didn't turn out that way, I ended up adding 3 miles RT to my hike as ground conditions confused-me-some ..... didn't do my due diligence.
Bob route is still good, we had a quiet hike.
We found our way to the signed "RD200 Gated Road" on the right side of Hwy %349 (31.09175,-102.01014). This road is 6.8 miles south of Hwy #67. Only one half of the gate was open, sign says "close gate", no signs of locks. We decided to proceed zeroed our odo.
0.0M ... left #349 westbound on RD200 (dirt).
1.6M ... JCT, sign on right reads "200", we stayed left.
1.8M ... stayed right at fork.
2.5M ... stayed right at fork on lesser road (31.06994,-102.03941), Road gets rougher from here-on. On our return we would see our only vehicle of the day at this fork, coming in from our right. He waved at us as we let him go ahead. We were concerned that he might lock the main gate, not so.
3.2M ... arrived at Gated Fence Line (just latched closed) signed "Klassen Energy Inc" but no posted signs (31.06905,-102.04836). Inside the fence is an old-looking/run-down oil field with pumps, tanks, sheds, old mobile equipment etc. Little sign of activity.
To the west I could see the wall of the mesa with the end of the Road at a third-of-the-way up its slope, above which are the turbines. I would understand later Bob's TH (1.5 miles further).
I decided to go for it, this being my TH, Rose's wait would be an hour or so longer than planned.
I walked the road to its end on the slope of the mesa, then xcountry climbed/scrambled (through the rock bands) perhaps .3 miles to the top of the flat mesa with the ugly turbines (not a fan), then an easy a mile of road walk.
Rose had a quiet wait, we got out without talking to a sole. I believe this is the type of outing where luck is required, you are after all, on private property.
I should note that a good service road for the wind farm leaves Hwy #67 on CR 420 (7.6 miles west of #349), heads south and climbs to the top of the mesa ..... a possible drive-up if one can get permission. We checked it out and unfortunately its locked and signed "West Texas Wind Energy Partners, LLC", "No Trespassing".
"COMPLETING A PB LIST IS A BIT LIKE CLIMBING A MOUNTAIN .... THERE'S ALWAYS ANOTHER ONE TO DO.
