Ascent Trip Report

4th highest named peak in Arkansas. We accented from the Ouachita Trail Black Fork Mountain Wilderness Trailhead. The trail starts out very well maintained but goes approximately a mile in the wrong direction before intersecting another trail in the correct direction. With little knowledge of these trails, we eventually headed straight for the summit and bushwhacked. We later picked up another trail to the summit. The last few hundred feet is covered in thick briars and thorns. The easiest way is to get to the top of the ridges and boulder hop above the thorns straight to the summit boulder mound. Great views but very long hike. Our decent was much more direct. We followed a different trail that headed directly towards the trailhead. I recommend ascending the same trial, which begins at a short road that crosses railroad tracks. (N 34.69071 W 94.33778) Take a left and the trail enters behind the tracks. This trail is a well traveled direct shot to the summit.
