Ascent of Peak 7070 on 2016-01-20
|Date:||Wednesday, January 20, 2016|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||7070 ft / 2154 m|
Ascent Trip ReportStarted out at about 9:00 am in the Chisos Basin. It was cool - high 40's but sunny out. Took the Laguna Meadow trail up to the meadow and headed out towards campsites LW2/3. On the lower part of the trail it seemed like I was hiking through alternating pockets of cool and warm air - strange sensation. All the way up the trail I had some irrational fear of a mountain lion jumping on me so I was continually looking over my shoulders. This trail is in the shade a good part of the morning until the sun rises over the South rim. Of course nothing happened. I did see a backpacker coming down who was out for three days on the Dodson and Blue Creek trails.
Started my bushwhack right where the junction to LW2 is. Mostly just knee high scrub (and cactus) all the way. Instead of marching to the ridge / rim I stayed 50-100 feet away to avoid trees and taller scrub - this worked well actually all the way to the summit. Got there at 11:37 am. Did not find a geodetic marker, nor a summit register anywhere. View was marginal back into the basin and North but there was a good view of Emory.
Ate lunch at the top and then booked back down and averaged 2 mph overall including the lunch break. Ok, for future reference, there are 21 switchback turns between the signs indicating to not cut them (there are many more before and after, but that's the count between the lower and upper signs). Also there are 7 shoulders you walk around on the lower part of the trail before getting to the basin.
Been a while since I bagged a peak so this felt good.
