Ascent Trip ReportOur ascent of Mount Fyffe, Gable and Gables End began along the 4WD track most commonly used to summit Mount Fyffe. Considering we had a significant hike beyond Fyffe, we decided to stay overnight at Fyffe Hut before making any ascents. We were battered with rain on the way up, but it was only about a two and a half hour hike.
The following day, with sunny skies overhead, we summited Mount Fyffe (1,602m), with glorious views of the sea below. From there we continued along the ridge in a north-easterly direction, and into more rugged, scree-covered terrain. The 4WD track quickly deteriorated into an un-maintained trail, marked with the occasional pole. A short side trip took us to the top of Gable (1,585m), where we contemplated the steep descent to the striking scree saddle between us and Gables End. Retracing our steps, we returned to the pole line again and scrambled down a 60 degree scree slope, doing our best not to start a rockfall. Once we were down we traversed the cool little saddle and reemerged onto the summit of Gables End (1,592m). According to our map, the summit was the third knoll on the ridge. From the top there were the best views yet of Uwerau (2,213m), Manakau (2,609m) and the rest of the Seaward Kaikouras.
As we had left most of our stuff at Fyffe Hut, we had to follow the same path to descend. This meant descending into the saddle, climbing up the steep slope, and then summiting Fyffe a second time. This part done, we now faced a punishing descent back to the trailhead. In all, it took a good seven hours to reach Gables End and return to the car, with roughly 900m ascent and 2,000m descent.
