Ascent Trip ReportAt intersection of NC 86 and Bus US 70 I headed east on Bus US 70 and in a 1/4 mile turned right into Orange County Senior Center and Sports Complex. It is a big white building with a large parking lot. I parked in the lot and walked acrosss Bus US 70 and up the dirt road that terminates at a very large light tan water tank.
There is a locked gate at the start of the road, but there are no posted signs. Construction is currently going on in the area. There are numerous plastic orange tree protection fences along both sides of the road.
I walked up the gently ascending road and near the tower I veered east into the woods and wandered around the flatish ridge a bit before locating a singular grouping of rocks that seemed to be the high point. This point is south east east of the water tank. Had to cross over three of the orange fences to get to the high point but had I hiked up the road closer to the water tank I would have only had to cross one. And one is indeed what I had to cross over on the way back.
No spectacular views on top although I was able to see the towers on Occoneechee thru the bare trees, but then you can see that mountain easy enough while cruising on nearby I-85.
About 2/3 to 3/4 mile round trip virtually all on dirt road.
