Ascent Trip ReportA road/whack to 4 areas .... 3.4 miles, 1:35 hours RT hiking .... 3.5 hours total for the county (including the driving/breaks).
This is our 17th day and our 7th state of our TEXAS WINTER TRIP 2016. We are on-route to Michael's family, our son, in Texas.
We used Bill Jacobs TR of 2003 which still applies today, this TR only adds information, one has to read Bill. There are 4 high point candidates. The area numbers that I provide in brackets are those from PB. I visited them as listed below.
We first visited the University of Western Alabama's (with its popular UWA TIGERS) sprawling campus in Livingston before starting out hiking.
Fourth Area (AREA 4) in Northeast Sector(32.55593,-88.02100) .... road walk with short wack, 1.2 miles, 35 minutes RT.
The gated road off of CR22 is unsigned (32.55593,-88.03169), posted "JRSHC", The gate is 200 yards up the road. A Check Station just inside with a map of "Joe Ruzic S Hunting Club". The whole area is logging/hunting area.
A glorious sunny day, in a beautiful tall-pine forest, made for a happy-uplifting walk.
I walked the good sandy road east .5 miles to an open area with 2 lean-tos and a tank. The high ground is a semi-wack .1 mile north .... obvious HP, to its north is a huge logged-out area.
Two Areas (AREA 2 & 3)1.5 miles West of Siloam Baptist Church .... road walk with short wack to 2 areas ... 1.2 miles, 35 minutes RT.
We parked at Bill's parking spot, the small gated road 1.8 miles west of the Church (32.42168,-88.30299), posted ""Keep Out".
I followed the sandy road north .2 mile to a right bend where it continues east/bends-to-northeast and comes to a fork at another .2 mile.
Where the road bends to the northeast, the high ground for Bill's first area (AREA 3) is to the right (east) 50 yards inside the woods at the obvious HP (32.42409,-88.30029).
At the fork I stayed right, the road descends slightly and arcs/climbs to the southeast .2 miles to an open grassy area. Chose Bill's second area (AREA 2) in the grassy area (32.42391,-88.29698. Few spots to the right are contenders.
Third Area (AREA 1) less than a mile further west of AREA 2 & 3 .... road and short whack, 1 mile, 25 minutes RT.
The road .8 mile further on is at (32.42089,-88.31459), gated with a number of signs "No Trespassing", "Alabama Forest Owners Association Inc, "No Hunting Wildlife Preserve".
I walked the sandy road south .4 miles to a junction, passing a tractor with a scraper-blade on-route, 100 yards before I went left (east) inside the woods and whacked 75 yards to the N-S ridge. I walked the wooded ridge and found nothing obvious, chose my spot at 32.41649,-88.31478).
Y'ALL COME BACK HERE."
