Ascent Trip Report

Started at a large turnoff at N33.22200 W116.75070 where there is an old turn-style entrance through the barbed wire fence marked with 2 pieces of red tape. There is another turn-style at the next turnout West. Stealth is impossible but required for this hike. The lake was very very low, so we hiked straight across, just watch out for fields of star thistle along the shore. Followed the old tire tracks. Crossed thru fence near Monkey Hill and went up. Did a fun class 3 climb near the benchmarks up a tall boulder to find a 1 foot square concrete base, old flagpole? Went down other side of Monkey Hill and about 0.8 mile to find the Azimuth mark at N33.23669 W116.71653 so for you benchmark completists go get it! Came back and went over the south end of the hill and explored lots of cool boulders. Fun hike across an area that used to be under water, evidenced by numerous very old beer bottles, probably thrown overboard by fishermen when Monkey Hill was an island.
