Ascent Trip Report

A bushwhack/road hike northbound from CR50 .... 1.5 miles, 45 minutes RT.

Rose and I are on our "TEXAS WINTER TRIP 2016", this New Year Day is our 5th day (4th state) of our trip and my first hike of 2016. The plan is to slowly make our way south, county-highpointing/playing-tourist on-route.

For this New Year's day short hike to the Putnam COHP I use Michael Schwartz's TR of 2001 which still applies. This TR attempts to only update/add information and is not a stand alone report, one must read Michael for the complete picture.

At the Junction of Hwy #34/Big Creek Road CR34-2 (in Lincoln CO) we zeroed our odo.
0.0M ... Jct #34/CR34-2, we traveled eastbound on Big Creek Road which immediately becomes CR56 at the Lincoln/Putnam CO Line.
2.0M ... stayed right at fork on CR50
3.7M ... Brian King white house #8496 on north (left) side of CR50. We parked here, this was my TH. The HP is half a mile to the north.

I knocked at the front door (slightly ajar) with no answer. The unkept house/grounds had little sign of habitation, although recent tire tracks where evident in the driveway.
All reports say the Mr King is very friendly to hikers, so I decided to proceed. Rose will stay back and deal with the consequences .... Rose's wait would be very quiet.

In the hollow, 100+ yards behind/north-of the house is a man made small reservoir, from where I bushwhacked northerly in open woods up the steep slope. Half-way up I came to a woods road which I took east to the saddle (southeast of the HP), then another woods road took me northwest to the summit.
The total ascent (less than a mile) taking 25 minutes. I descended/wacked a straight line in 13 minutes.

The obvious/open HP is capped with a broken-down small house trailer and scattered furniture.

We spent the rest of the day shopping/movie(Creed) in Barboursville Mall.

"ONLY WHEN YOU'VE BEEN IN THE DEEPEST VALLEY CAN YOU KNOW HOW MAGNIFICENT IS TO BE ATOP THE MOUNTAIN." ....... president richard nixon.
