Ascent Trip ReportThis is a combined trip report for Rice Peak and Rice Peak-North Ridge.
I approached the area from the north via the Oracle Control Rd. -aka- S Mt. Lemmon Rd. to the Peppersauce CG and turned right (west) driving approximately 1.6 miles along the 4WD road. Google maps lists this road's number as 29, topos don't show a road to here, only a partial trail. After finding a suitable spot to park I departed the vehicle at 1:03 pm and began hiking the 4WD roads towards the peak, first along road 29, then 4472, next 4483, and finally turning right onto the Arizona Trail for the final stretch to the peak.
I arrived at the summit of Rice Peak at 2:59 pm after approximately 4 miles of hiking. I located and photographed the RICE BM before moving down the north side of the peak towards the Rice Peak-North Ridge CoHP. After approximately 0.2 mile of travel down the north side of the peak along what appeared to be a rough trail, between oaks, and a bit of bushwacking I ended up slightly below (north of) the CoHP, per the waypoint on my GPS. So after a short backtrack I eventually located the cairn with the CoHP logbook around 3:18 pm. I signed in and after a few photos departed the North Ridge CoHP and headed back up to Rice Peak, this time more or less following the "trail" with a bit of bushwacking here and there.
My trek out was a reverse of the route up and I arrived back at my vehicle at 4:58 pm. Overall elevation gain was 2,799 ft. with a round trip hike of 8.9 miles. The views of the northern side of the Catalinas from this peak/hike are stunning. There was a bit of remnant snow still present in a couple of the shadowed areas along the road and heading down to the CoHP but not enough to hinder progress. Overall a great afternoon out.
