Ascent Trip Report

Mt Tom, Mt Field, Mt Willey, Mt Avalon: Avalon Trail, A-Z Trail, Mt. Tom Spur Trail, Willey Range Trail

Date of Hike: 03/14/09

Participants: me and crazy Bob

Trail Conditions: Avalon trail, A-Z trail, Mt Tom spur trail 1- 2 inches of loose granular on top of packed crust. Microspikes were the weapon of choice. Willey Range trail to Mt. Field also in good shape also barebootable, traction helpful. From Mt. Field to Mt. Willey recommend snowshoes as postholing began. All stream crossings are still snow bridged.

Special Equipment: Microspikes and snowshoes. Safety/Sun glasses recommended (spruce branches), sunscreen, lots of caffeine, and Little Debbie snacks or equivalent fast digesting carbs.

Comments: 9am start at the Highland Center. Bare-booted up the Avalon to the A-Z trail. Fairly easy footing, but some traction would be helpful. So, I put on my microspikes. Bob doesn't have microspikes, and I'm quite sure has MSE (MicroSpike envy). Although, he won't admit it. Spent most of hike up trying to stay ahead of a group of 25 or so. Got up to Mt. Tom with splendid views. Left the large group at Mt. Tom and headed over to Mt. Field. More great views from Mt. Field into the Pemi and across to the Franconia Range. I would have been fine turning back here and going over to Avalon and calling it a day. But crazy Bob encouraged me to go over to Mt. Willey. I would hate him for the next 2.7 miles. I was out of supplemental oxygen, so I sucked down a red bull and off we went for Mt. Willey. Some postholing began, so, we put on our 32" "Tubb-Boats" we had been carrying all day. I would really like to use a smaller shoe, but in my weight class it is not recommended. We stayed in snowshoes the rest of the trip back from Mt. Willey over to Mt. Field again then over to Mt. Avalon. A lot of butt sliding down from Mt. Avalon. Back down at the car at 4:20pm or so, 10 miles later.
