Ascent Trip Report

How does one have an unsuccessful attempt at a drive up, basically flat highpoint? Two words: snow and bison. The day before, a significant winter storm had passed through the area, probably the first of the season, so when I arrived at the gate, there was a descent amount of snow piled up on the road. Now, given that there is signage indicating no walking due to Bison, I definitely made a first attempt with the rental car which was quickly aborted. Toyota Sienna - great front wheel drive rental car but not so great on the ground clearance. So, against the posted wishes of the land owners (for our safety for sure), I decided that I would walk the 1.3 miles in and back. Didn't make that. I crested the first hill and saw the Bison herd about a 1/4 mile away. While they were stationary, I was not particularly concerned. But, 50 steps later, they started trundling towards the highpoint. Deciding to exercise a little bit of prudence, I turned around and started heading back to the car whereupon the herd seemed to become particularly agitated. Yeah, don't walk in the field - drive only. I guess I will hit this one the next time I fly through DEN and there isn't snow on the ground.
