Ascent Trip ReportThe approach to Lake Mountain from CA 96 is approx. 17.5 miles on a smooth, easy grade, well maintained dirt road except for a moderately rough stretch at the end. From the Walker Creek Rd east of Seiad Valley follow FSR 45N64 for 3 miles, turn left uphill on N65, at N71 turn right for the final 2.8 miles to Lake Mountain L.O. I greatly enjoyed a lengthy visit with Nancy Hood, the reigning veteran among CA L.O. staffers. She is now in her 48th season as a fire lookout in Klamath N.F. She has been at Lake Mountain for 14 years and spent many years at the Dry Lake and Deadwood Baldy L.O.s, both now defunct. Nancy was a youngster when she moved with her parents from Long Beach to Siskiyou County. She lives at Scott's Bar when not on L.O. duty. Her book of invaluable 8"x10" photos includes most of the lookouts in Klamath N.F., which numbered 22 at one time. The present Lake Mountain L.O. dates from 1934 and has the distinction of being the oldest L.O. in continuous service in the state.
