long with Sierra Buttes L.O. and Buck Rock L.O., The Needles L.O. is perched more impressively than other California fire L.O.s Turn off the Western Divide Hwy just south of the CA 190 intersection and go 2.8 miles on FSR 21S05 to The Needles TH. The well traveled trail leads to a saddle at 7,820' in 1.7 miles. The final 0.3 mile leads by laddered steps to a pinnacle , then via boardwalk over a knife-edged ridge before climbing the final ladder to the catwalk. This classic L.O., built in 1938 by the CCC, is constantly staffed during fire season. The Needles is the premier rockclimbing area in the southern Sierra
