Ascent Trip Report

Frigid temps to start. Sunny and cold until out of the trees. 9 am start, 5 pm finish, with challenging snow conditions.

About a foot of snow at most in spots. One ice layer about 1-2" deep, second ice layer about 6" deep, dry powder in between. Surface hoar was prominent. No new snow for several days, and clear skies and cold temps.

Took Commonwealth Basin Trail to Red Mountain trail, then bushwhacked to PCT for "fun". Cut the PCT again later, which ended up being a very energy-sapping endeavor uphill. Met a guy who advised against running the ridge to the Kendall summit due to conditions, so I kicked an ascending traverse to the summit. This was difficult due to snow that would not hold a step, and ice that would not kick in, and ice axe that would hit ground. Ran the ridge on the descent - this was much better. Snow gully was mixed - some steps held, some did not.

Hit the summit around 1 pm. Clear views in all directions.

Took the PCT down until the CBT, with a few routefinding mistakes due to many trails everywhere. Road to parking lot was very icy - we parked elsewhere.
