Ascent of Castle Rock on 2015-11-24
|Date:||Tuesday, November 24, 2015|
|Ascent Type:||Unsuccessful - Turned Back|
| Motorized Transport to Trailhead:||4x4 Vehicle|
| Elevation:||5350 ft / 1630 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI parked at the parking area 6.3 miles down Harris Creek Rd from Highway 55. First crossed the stream and hiked directly up the STEEP slope to the ridge and followed it all the way to the rock. I later found out that you follow the path until just before entering the forest and the U-shaped turn in the trail. Before that point, make your way up to the ridge and follow it up to Castle Rock (this was our descent path as shown in the GPS file). It was very dense brush, so some bushwhacking was required.
The rock is very crumbly and coated with lichen. Made it about 2/3 way to the summit and hit a dead end - a totally exposed 8-10 foot vertical crack. Running out of time and with the weather was turning bad, decided to live another day, and climbed down. This is supposed to be a class 4 climb, but my route was too dangerous to free climb and bordering on class 5. I need to return another day and see if there is a safer way to the summit. It's on the bucket list now as I know of others who have free climbed it.
