Ascent Trip Report

This was a DPS sponsored day hike led by Mat Kelliher and Bill Simpson via the DPS Standard Route from the Excelsior Mine Road. The group left the vehicles at 6:40 a.m., with Mat leading us past an old mine and up a brushy valley to a saddle. Once at the saddle, the group went up, down, and around the various bumps along the ridge to the top of Kingston Peak, arriving around 12 noon. Afterwards, the group backtracked to the saddle, then headed down towards the cars to the trailhead, arriving at 4:50 p.m.

The hike and climb of the peak was class 2 and the round trip distance is about 9.0 miles. Also, the total elevation gain is about 3,800’, which includes about 1,500’ of extra elevation gain along the up and down ridge in both directions as well as some extra elevation gain at the end near the trailhead.
