Ascent Trip ReportFor a "dessert" hike, I headed over to Fitzwilliam to hike Little Monadnock Mountain after bagging Indian Arrowhead.
I started out by following the right branch of the Rhododendron Loop through the famous groves (not in bloom- would definitely be worth a return trip when they are) to the Little Monadnock Trail junction; I turned right here. The LMT approached the mountain side at easy grades, passing through some old logging slash. It then got steadily steeper, with a scramble thrown in to spice up the hike. Near the top, the trail paralleled and crossed a neat stone wall, then climbed to the open, ledgy ridgecrest, where it met the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail. There was a view toward Mt. Monadnock and Gap Mountain at this spot. I turned left (south) and followed the M-M Trail to the summit (dodging some blowdowns in the process).
Not much for views from the top (although the summit was distinct, open, and rocky), but I spent about 10-15 min. here eating some snacks and drinking some water, then headed back down the way I came.
