Ascent Trip ReportIt would have been far more convenient to approach from the N via Bizkir but rain, low cloud and our flight home in 2 days convinces me it is not the time to explore uncharted dirt roads so we opt for the long way round via Gundogmus. Take good quality tarmac road off the D695 signed to “Gundogmus 36km” (km0.0) then:- km 13.9 pass through small community of Curuk with large number of goats. Ascend through pine forest, road degenerates to rough rocks in a section of road straightening and widening project. km 34.1 arrive at the lively little town of Gundogmus (Population 7900), shops and bakery selling excellent bread. Depart in an easterly direction on road 07-29 signed to “Koprulu 30km” passing a hillside of graves on the edge of the town, some almost on the road. To my surprise the tarmac road continues – and is being improved. km39.7 a major road junction with Mescit at edge. There are tarmac roads to left and right as well as a steeply descending dirt road ahead to left. We take the tarmac road on the left, a gentle snaking rising traverse of the wooded hillside. km47.5 cross a wide col at ~alt.1500m then gradual descent into farmland / pasture with dry braided river debris. Cross a bridge over small river then road swings right along the LHS of a valley basin and descends to cluster of buildings including restaurant and toilet at ~alt.1400m. We continue on tarmac road left ascending on RHS of dry river valley into a higher grassy basin, Kuruca restaurant on RHS opposite green Mescit. This is a superb wild area of rocky peaks and valleys; just a pity the weather is so poor today. km52.4 at tee junction at end of meadow we turn right ascending into valley which narrows into rocky gorge. km54.9 fork right climbing N side of narrow valley to pastures at alt.1880m. Valley falls away steeply to the right. We explore a turning left and find Casir Yaylasi, the village is deserted, houses locked and left for the winter. A looping dirt road returns us to the tarmac road we had deviated from. We turn left (east). The road climbs a rocky valley with water troughs. km 64.7 reach a large village again abandoned for winter, we leave the tarmac and turn hard right on rough rocky track climbing a ridge on the SW side of the village. km65.7 arrive in small grassy bowl with shepherds hut, broken limestone rises into grey cloud the summit of Geyik Daglari only 3km and 750m ascent away. This is our trail head. (N36.90631deg, E032.14871deg., alt. 2108m)
We set off SE up easy broken rock the only problem being the patches of wet slithery red soil. Pick our way up through rock bands the cloud rising giving reasonable views of the hillside ahead. At ~alt.2500m we contour around the N side of a huge sink hole then up stable scree to gain the shoulder. Up to now we’ve been relatively sheltered from the SW wind. Ascend the shoulder in cloud to the main ridge recognised by steep drop off its NE side. Buffeted by 80km/h wind we make our way along the easy ridge, cross the minor peak of Utele Dagi, descend S to col then E up easy slopes to summit of Geyik Daglari. There’s a nice pointed cairn and 15m away a stone wind shelter and stub of concrete survey pillar, difficult to say which is the higher. (N36.88970deg.,E032.17162deg., alt.2881m)
