Ascent Trip ReportEven though snow was visible on Lucky Peak, I wanted to get this hike in before the weather got even worse. I set off after lunch and parked at the Fish and Game office north of Hilltop on ID-21. I began hiking up the road, which was damp but not too muddy. About a mile into the hike the road became quite muddy and I heard several gun shots in the distance, I had overlooked that it was hunting season!
The road became snow covered at about 4200 feet, which was actually a relief because it was easier to walk through the snow than the mud. The drawback was that it made finding the trail leading to the ridge nearly impossible. I followed the road too far and missed the trail. Realizing I had gone too far up the road, I had to cut cross-country to the ridge to join the trail. The snow was about 6" deep, which made for a difficult cross-country trek.
Once finding the ridge and trail, the rest of the hike was a breeze. The snow at the summit was 6-8" deep, which slowed me down a bit, but made for a beautiful hike with a winter-like feel. Hiking down was simple as I was able to follow the "trail" back to the road. I only included the GPS route for the decent as the ascent was quite a mess and not a recommended route. |
