Ascent Trip Report

We made good use of Don Nelson's Summitpost page for this peak. Thanks, Don!

It appeared that if we'd had a 4WD vehicle it would have been okay to drive all the way to the red gate - but we had a sedan, so we walked the jeep road. We actually left it before reaching the gate and went cross-country over toward the stile. This was in deep, springy grass which was somewhat taxing travel; we tried following other faint vehicle tracks down (the farther west line on the GPS track) but they appeared to be heading to private ranches so we eventually cut back to the road that provides known legal access. If we went back, we'd go down the same way we came up. Getting across the gulches as you traverse the slope will go best if you put some effort into finding a decent spot to cross. The gulches can be quite deep, with drop-offs concealed under vegetation.

Upon crossing the stile into the rain forest we did not find a blue-flagged path - in fact, for the first tenth of a mile or so we did not find flags at all. We eventually came across mostly pink (with a few yellow) flags on a reasonably well-defined path, but note that it was "reasonably well-defined" only in the context of this rain forest. It was not trivial to follow.

When we reached the ridge NW of Eke we finally found some blue flagging, which we followed to the summit. The initial drop off that ridge gave us a little trouble finding the route - it goes left crossing above a slide area just below the ridge top. Look for a blue flag on a limb downhill on the left side of the slide, as you face the peak. The flags are sketchy in spots, and you will get wet and muddy, but with well-developed tracking skills you should be able to follow the path. See the photo for an idea of what you will be dealing with.
