Ascent Trip Report

Gilbert Peak 13,442 ft, Summit County Highpoint.

Gilbert in the way back as seen from Kings.
Drove to Henry's Fork after work and camped at the trailhead. Started out pre-dawn to Dollar Lake, set up camp, and unweighted my pack some. Then headed due East to the base of the obvious ramp (40.825327, -110.368434) and hiked up to the top of the ridge (40.819072, -110.367291) to the plateau. After that, it's just open meadow toward the Summit County Highpoint until you get to the base of the summit block when it turns to piles and piles of oversized talus.
The summit area was an immense level talus field with the highpoint marked by a shelter cairn in the middle of the high plateau. Views from the highpoint are obstructed by the rim of the vast plateau. So, I walked over to the edge and looked down into the valley below to discover a couple cool milky-turquoise lakes due South toward Gunsight and Kings. They really should just call it Gilbert Mound (vice Peak.. because it seemed there was no actual pointy peak)

Hiked back down the ramp. Filtered water from the stream descending from the ramp, had dinner, and turned in. Then tagged Kings the next day.
