Ascent Trip ReportMount Nebo 11,928 ft, Utah County Highpoint.
My very first County Highpoint in Utah! Camped at Payson Lakes with John, Mark, Dewey, and Stirlynn from our Ogden Hiking group. John whipped up a gourmet dinner with pasta to provide us energy for the next day's hike. Evening was pleasant so just slept outside under the stars. Up early greeted with pancakes and eggs. Then packed into Dewey's jeep to travel to the trailhead. Every now and again along the road, we'd have to go around some folks in orange vests taking a Sunday drive, allegedly "truck-hunting". Long approach hike passing Nebo's subpeaks. It was already a long day, so we opted to circumvent the lower peaks and pressed onward and upward. Got to the high saddle and crossed the razorback ridge which had loose scree beneath. Actually first heard the scree (before seeing it) when someone above knocked a rock off the trail into the chute and the whole thing slid down hundreds of feet sounding like little bells and wind-chimes tumbling down the mountain. Finally meeting the summit block and climbed to the top. Dozen or so folks hangin' out enjoying the panoramic views, resting, and snacking. The breathtaking sights and feeling of accomplishment is what got me hooked on peakbagging. While reading up on the hike, I had noticed Nebo was this County's Highpoint, and then wondered how many more counties there were. Well, 29 counties in Utah, 1 down 28 to go! On the way down, thunderstorm with heavy hail made one of the adjacent peaks appear snow covered. We got drenched with localized heavy rain! And then of course came the lightning strikes and booming thunder all around. Note to self.. get fiberglass/carbon trekkers instead of these metal ones! Back at Payson Lakes, John grilled up some well earned steaks and perfect sides. Thanks John. |
