Ascent Trip ReportWe were trying for Saranac Ultra but lost a couple hours total of daylight here and there, going to re-try when there is better daylight hours, hiking in the dark too much takes up a lot of time.
Go from Jack Rabbit Ski Trail for quickest easiest-Whiteface Inn, Whiteface Inn Rd. Trail is on the left just past the first big sign/turn on right, before tennis courts etc. SMALL yellow sign that says Jackrabbit, tiny gravel area to fit a couple cars. Sign-in 100yds in.
Stay straight on ski trail, narrows and widens. 1.4 miles (~23 minutes) to Placid Lean to. And another 10 minutes to the split of Mckenzie/Haystack marked by sign. Start Mck accent to left 7:34am. 60 degree Nov day, no spikes needed but wet trail from here-wear gaiters. Summit Mck 8:50-there are a few false summits/lookouts (4?), keep going until can't go further and there is a lookout to the left and right (left lookout nice place to stand and looks back to Haystack).
Didn't stay long & back at split by 10am. Time saver and easier route-continue up the Jackrabbit Trail, don't follow the sign to Haystack/Rt86. Herd path up back side of Haystack very easy to follow/find. It is .4 miles from split, marked by small cairn on left- 5 minutes maybe. Then 15 min to summit Haystack. 15 min back down to cairn & by 11am at split again. Jogged out back to car by 11:20am
