Ascent Trip Report

Crammed four tacos in my mouth before setting out to climb Camelback. I had wanted to watch the sunset but it turns out the Echo Canyon TH parking lot is only open from sunrise to sunset, and is actually enforced. I asked the ranger on duty (who was very nice) about the consequences and he said he would start ticketing about half an hour after sunset.

I scurried up the trail, which is a nice quality wide switchbacking trail for the first bit. It then becomes fenced on one side (to prevent you from falling off) - clearly this part of the trail was blasted into the rock that towers over it to the right. There are two sections with handrails to assist with the slabs. Easy enough to walk up, but definitely speeds up the descent on the way down.

The rest of the trail is a lot of steep, high quality rock hopping. The trail is well signed, with trail markers everywhere you feel the need to have one, as well as elevation and progress profiles. The hike itself is only 1.23 miles long.

The views from the trail and summit are phenomenal. You can see Phoenix, the Phoenix mountains... really, as far as the eye can go. The sunset is phenomenal. Would have liked more time.

Down in 29 minutes, up in 50 with pauses for near taco puke breaks, photos, and leg cramps. Had done Flatiron and No Name earlier in the day, so was also a bit fatigued with numbness in the legs.

Really, a high quality hike and climb all around. Would definitely do it again.
