Ascent Trip ReportA short road hike with a moderate bushwack .... 4.2km, 2:10 hours RT.
This mountain can be done together with Mont Sugarloaf to the south (using the same TH), see its TR for the details.
We approached from the north, Autoroute 10, exit 106 (Eastman). We drove south on Hwy #245 to Bolton Centre where we turned left onto Route Nicholas Austin and went east to a right turn onto Chemin Cooledge. A good distance south we turned right on Chemin du Lac which we followed south for 2.4km to a right turn on Chemin Faucons Pelerins, 1.7km west came to a brook crossing with a rope across the road, signed "Privee".
Parked here this was our TH (the same as for Mont Sugarloaf).
I hiked the road west .5km to a left bend (45.13099,-72.32005) which if followed goes south to Mont Sugarloaf (see its TR). I started my bushwack to Mont Hog's Back at this bend, my route to the summit was generally a northeast compass line along the rough ridge, 1.3km as the crow flies. All distance I give in this TR are guess-estimates only.
I started out northeast on an old overgrown road (nicely shown on the satellite image) and at 250M I came to a well-used Hunter's trail which I followed for 400M to a Hunters Stand (45.13330,-72.31727). From here I wacked 1km to the summit, going around a few bumps, but always trying to get back on the ridge (my route line). The mountain terrain however is very rough with ups-and-downs/rock-outcrops/ledges so my actual route zig-zagged its way as it climbed/dropped, always looking for the easy way. I estimate my bushwack route from the road at 1.6km.
The wack route in mixed woods (mostly deciduous) was somewhat difficult to find but not difficult.
The wooded HP (45.13779,-72.31222) is obvious, views through the trees are available after the foliage.
I ascended in 80 minutes and descended back to the TH in 45 minutes. We went to Mont Hawk for the second time, again no access, see its TR.
"I'VE SEEN THE MOUNTAIN TOPS, AND I'VE SEEN ITS OFFERINGS,
AND I'VE BEEN THIS WAY BEFORE, AND I'M SURE TO BE THIS WAY AGAIN."
