Ascent Trip ReportMade it to the mouth of Basin Canyon in my low clearance AWD vehicle. Road was very well graded dirt, any vehicle could make it. Started hiking the dirt road up Basin Canyon about half hour after sunset. Used head lamp the whole way. At the end of the dirt road, I followed the paths of least resistance (aka deer trail) north to the ridge, then followed the never-ending snowy ridge all the way to the summit. The mostly full moon didn't show itself until 2.5 hours later, after I was already descending, but when it did show up, lit up the entire range, making it easy to find my way back. Brought crampons, but didn't put them on until the descent. Probably could have made it without them, but I didn't want to waste time falling on my butt. Very windy on the upper mountain, sustained 40+mph. Snow was at most ankle deep. All the structures at the top had ice crusted all over them. |
