Ascent Trip Report

Update: From facebook thread I think I've got it figure out; we weren't "lost" at any point or fretting too much, just like what the heck where is it-and why aren't there ANY signs-definitely in need of some cairns somewhere-I'll build some next time! I think we must have bared left (idk where the the option to stay right to go directly to Mckenzie of 86 trail was), summited Haystack (I was looking and definitely no yellow marker that I saw-I like Cairns!-they don't get lost from the summit) and ended up coming down herd path from Haystack onto Jackrabbit. Then when we tried right off the herd path we went for 5min instead of 10min and didn't reach the final Mck trail ascend point. Oh well now we know and I think we will have our bearings straight. Still a nice warmup/practice hike, and I guess we got 1 of the reg Saranac 6 complete haha

Attempted to do the Ultra starting with Mckenzie & Haystack from 86. Myself & another person, neither of whom are newbies-25/46 of 46er for me-mostly solo-and my hiking partner just finished 100 mile Northville-Placid Trail. Terrible time with this trail so if anyone has some insight email me Passed old foundation, went over dam, looked on ascent AND descent for Haystack trail to left and did not see ANY markers. Went up steep ascent, came to small clearing, continued up to much larger clearing/lookout, assumed false summit? is it? and continued along ridge, blue marker on tree seemingly to trail leading down. Followed this, very few markers and none at bottom. Trail came out onto wide trail or road-which I think is the Jack Rabbit trail from looking at the map (unfortunately we stupidly forgot the map in the car and didn't worry about it since we thought this was an easy to follow trail!). Small cairn at this intersection. No other markers seen anywhere! Searched woods straight ahead and NO visible path, no markers. Went right for a few minutes, then turned around and went left for a little bit search woods for marker and nothing. Were we on Jack Rabbit Trail?-and needed to continue straight into woods after trail intersection despite lack of markers. Or were we somehow on Haystack? I don't think so. We will re-try with gps watch running to clock mileage and exactly where splits should be. May also try going from Whiteface Inn Road?
