Ascent Trip Report

I turned off I-8 at the In-ko-pa Park exit, connected with Old Hwy 80 toward Jacumba, and drove about 1/4 mile SW to an unsigned road. There is ample parking on this road about 3/4 mile in from Old Hwy 80 near overhead transmission lines. I hiked up the moderately steep, rough road to a saddle at 3,830' from which an old jeep road goes left to Smuggler’s Cave. I continued to a 3-way junction, turned left. Then left at a second junction, and left again at a third junction from which a road leads to “Prospect.” From this junction you can see the false peak with a large granite boulder that looks ready to roll. A use trail ascends to a saddle between the boulder-topped false peak and Blue Angels Peak’s summit rocks, now just a short distance away. I found the “Smuggler” BM, which assured me that I was on Blue Angels Peak. However, not far away was another rocky area that look liked it was higher. So I made my way over to P 1380 to make sure I tagged the highest point in the immediate vicinity. Before starting back down, I stopped to take a look at the interesting, impressive International Boundary Marker 231. It is one of such markers along the U.S.-Mexico border numbered consecutively from #1 at the Gulf of Mexico east of Brownsville-Matamoros to #258 at the Pacific shoreline. The return to the car was pleasant and uneventful--complete solitude along the border. Blue Angels Peak had provided me with an enjoyable, solitary hike in the best of weather for climbing the Imperial CoHP. Jerry Schad’s route description in his book Afoot and Afield in San Diego County was most helpful.
