Ascent Trip ReportUsing Fred Lobdell's TR we found our way to the 4-way intersection at Low Gap. The drive up was on a fairly good gravel mountain road, unlike the very rough steep road to Keeney Knob.
Conditions have changed, the Grassy Knob Ridge is now home to a Wind Farm. I was able to drive directly to the HP on fairly good roads (few short rough spots) with no gates on-route. I should note that this area sees a lot of traffic, we passed-by numerous vehicles and ATVs.
GRASSY KNOB ... a drive-up on fairly good gravel roads.
From Low Gap we zeroed our odo and traveled north.
0.00M ... left Low Gap northbound (BM 4095 on topo).
0.30M ... stayed left at fork (BM 4153 on topo) southwest bound.
1.00M ... stayed left at fork with Wind Mill #XMFR-B4 on left. This was the old gated fork.
1.75M ... arrived at fork (38.06583,-80.49728) with the HP and Wind Mill #XMFR-A18 immediately before on the right. Both roads continue/descend to the west.
The present obvious HP is 40 yards southeast of the Wind Mill and 40 yards north of the road, at GPS 38.06533,-80.49654.
We returned to Low Gap deciding to pay a visit to Cold Knob. BTW, from this Gap it appears the road dropping to the east on its way to Ellis Knob is driveable (original plan was to take it in, no time).
COLD KNOB .... an ATV track/wack .... less than 1 mile, 35 minutes RT.
We parked at Low Gap and I walked the rough road south 200 yards to a T-Junction that circles the summit Knob. At 40 yards left there is a steel gate on the right, at the bottom of an ATV track. A number of ATVers descended as I reached the gate, one of them told me that the track would take me directly to the summit, "But don't expect views, you need to go to the south side."
I followed the track as it took me to the south side of the summit, then a sharp right, northbound to the summit. Chose my spot at the east side of the clearing (38.06189,-80.47493).
I shortcutted my descended by bushwacking north back to the steel gate.
We drove south to Lewisburg for the night.
