Ascent Trip ReportA track walk with a bushwack to a side peak .... 1.5 miles, 55 minutes RT
I used the route in Michael Schwartz TR which still applies after 14 years. This TR aims to update his report.
Sliding Run (CR#40) access road to the TH at the church is a one-lane paved road.
The storage tank is no longer there, where Michael says " .... At 100 feet in, bear right at a storage tank onto an unimpressive grassy track that ... ". However the track is definitely there (albeit somewhat obscure, but its there).
As you get higher up (300-400 yards from the summit) the track s starting to be somewhat overgrown with some thorny brush.
A surface pipe line runs besides the BM "USGS, LONGSHOAL, 1956" on the obvious summit.
On my return I climbed to LOCUST KNOB, leaving the track west of the summit and wacking/scrambling less than 200 yards up to the obvious summit (38.89529,-80.68227). The steep eastern slope is mostly open maple woods with some thorny stuff at the bottom.
An interesting knob with views through the trees, well worth the climb.
I should note that no matter where I've been on this hiking trip in WV, thorny brush and gas smells is common.
We returned to Sutton where Rose did some shopping and we washed our van before we continued south to the Rose Benchmark (Braxton COHP).
