Ascent Trip ReportBittersweet, emotional day for a hike, on the first anniversary of my wife's passing. Brooke made it one of her goals to hike the top 100 peaks in and around SD, but cancer prevented her from finishing. So I am taking up the mantle for her. The day was nice -- temps in the low to mid-50s after several weeks of a heat spell. The PCT is easily navigable and this portion is a beautiful, secluded track. To get to that seclusion required some careful driving along Lost Valley Road, but the directions I found from http://www.summitpost.org/combs-peak-bucksnort-mountain/293242 were impeccable. The duck signaling the ascent from PCT was apparently not quite big enough on my first pass, as I probably walked a quarter- to half-mile past it before realizing I needed to turn it around (I built the duck up a little higher on my way out). But once I found the ascent, it was quite easy to make my way up to the peak. The trail was not too difficult, and there were plenty of easy-to-find ducks keeping me on the right path. The vistas from the top were fantastic. The way down was a little slippery over dirt and loose rocks, which led to me falling a couple times (nothing remarkable though). Well worth the trip, even though it was a long drive from central San Diego!
