Ascent Trip ReportThe UPSHUR COHP is a one way road walk to of 1.1 miles from the TH.
I used Richard Oestreicher's good southern approach, this TR attempts to add some detail. I visited 3 peaks on this hike.
From the Junction of Hwy #219/CR#46 in the village of Mill Creek (about 16 miles south of Elkins) we followed the very windy/up-and-down paved CR#46 road westerly for 16.7 miles to a right turn onto High Germany Road (CR#46-2) in the hamlet of Blue Rock. We zeroed our odo.
0.00M ... Left CR#46 northbound on CR#46-2.
0.87M ... Road on left leads to a Gas Well. I used this road as my TH to access Peak 3580 on our return trip, as noted below.
2.11M ... made a sharp right on unsigned road
2.86M ... arrived at a 4-way corner, made a sharp left on unsigned old Adolf Road.
3.17M ... passed road on the left, we stayed straight.
3.79M ... arrived at a 3-way junction, the road to the left was my route to Upshur COHP and Peak 3205, We parked here (38.76344,-80.10518).
I note that this CR#46-2 road is very rough, I drove it slowly and gingerly, squeezing the steering wheel the whole time. Watch-out for the protruding rocks and pot holes.
I walked the road north-westerly for 1+ mile directly to a Gas Well with a green tank. On route I passed-by a Gas Well on the right at .3M and after another .25 miles came to a fork where I stayed right on the steep road (most of the climbing begins here).
From the tank I went 100 yards right-of-north inside the woods to the PB coordinates for the UPSHUR COHP , no sign of County Line so I stomped/gridded the area and called it good. No views here.
Instead of backtracking I decided to visit the Peak 3205 to the east.
PEAK 3205 ... from the Upshur COHP its a .3 mile east.
From the COHP the plan was to bushwack east to this peak, as luck would have it I immediately picked up old woods roads that took me .3 miles directly to the obvious HP (just besides a road), 38.76822,-80.11471. Limited view though the trees.
I short-cutted my descent .... half way back towards the Upshur COHP I took an old woods road that descended left(south then east), taking me .5 miles to the fore-noted Gas Well at .3 miles from the TH.
My estimated RT distance to the 2 peaks was 2.2 miles, taking me 1:30 minutes.
Once back to the TH we drove back out stopping in to visit Peak 3580.
On the drive back we pulled in the road to the gas well. I wacked north 50-70 yards, stomped the area, nothing special here.
We moved west to the Lewis COHP, the back road driving in WV is no fun.
