Ascent Trip ReportFeb 21-- Our Mountain Travel Group of 14, led by Sergio Fitch-Watkins, departed the Best Western Majestic Hotel by mini-van at 10:00AM. At Amecameca a warm-up hike to the Sanctuary of the Senor del Sacromonte overlooking town for great views of Popo and Ixta, then lunch at the popular El Meson de los Amigos on the colorful town square. Later this afternoon we visited the magnificent, very modern Vicente Guerro Lodge at Tlamacas (12,950') on Popo’s slopes before returning to the Paso de Cortes (11,150'), the low point in the broad ridge connecting Popocateptl with Ixtaccihuatl. Camped near the microwave station about a mile from the La Joya TH (13,100'),where we started our backpack in two short segments to the Ayoloco Hut (15,355') . Feb 22-- Hiked from La Joya via use trail and X-C to an open campsite about half way to the Ayoloco Hut, pitching our tents shortly after 3:00PM. Feb 23–Another short day acclimatizing as we continued to the Ayoloco Hut, arriving by mid-afternoon. Feb 24–A 7:00AM departure for Ixta via the rocky slopes above the hut to the Ayoloco Glacier. Then up the glacier (roped, crampons, ice axe) to the summit ridge before the final hour’s easy approach to the broad snowfield covering the summit (El Peco). All went well, and we were back at the hut by 2:30PM and, after an hour to rest and break camp, at La Joya by early evening to meet the vans, which took us to the Vicente Guerro Lodge for a welcomed dinner, hot showers (!), and a good night’s sleep in the dormitory bunks. |
