Ascent Trip Report

Yesterday I made the 600- mile, 10-hour drive from Berkeley to Baker, NV, and camped overnight at the Upper Lehman Creek Campground (7,750')near Wheeler Peak. Early this morning I was pleasantly surprised that I could drive all the way to the Wheeler Peak TH at 10,000' A good, well constructed trail leads to the summit in about 4 miles. It was a beautiful day, but near the top a strong, cold wind was blowing, thus discouraging any lengthy summit break. A fine peak, geologically very interesting, with none higher for many miles around. Wheeler Peak is the second highest peak in Nevada after Boundary Peak as well as being the HP of the Snake Range and White Pine County. Back at the car, I drove to Baker for a hearty mid-day breakfast, then drove home.
