Ascent Trip ReportHiked up to Horse Camp from Bunny Flat yesterday afternoon. Enjoyed the evening talking with others at the Sierra Club's Shasta Alpine Lodge. Turned in early with plans for a pre-dawn start. It was hard to break a comfortable sleep, but I was ready to go by 3:00AM, while Murray decided to sleep in a while longer. So off I went up Olberman's Causeway and along Avalanche Gulch, passing Helen Lake (10,400'), 1.8 miles from the lodge). Soon I hit snow as I headed steeply up to the saddle between Thumb Rock and the Red Banks. Then through the Red Banks to the ridge leading up Misery Hill. The route levels off as it crosses a snowfield and heads for the obvious short final approach to the left of the summit rocks, which are an easy scramble. The view was incredible--360 degrees--with great visibility. I lingered to enjoy these perfect conditions before starting down around 10:00A I passed Murray coming up just below Misery Hill. He completed his climb, while I had my best-ever glissade from the Red Banks down nearly to Lake Helen. to the end of the snow. An uneventful return to Horse Camp and Bunny Flat. |
