Ascent Trip Report

I knew going in that it was the first day of hunting season, but it was hot, which limited my choice of areas, so I decided to climb Hawes. I thought that if I were to go way in on 2N13, there would be no hunters in the area. Wrong; they were lots of them (easy to tell because they all have trucks with covered beds to hide their dirty work). The first part of the hike is a flat jaunt along an overgrown road; then through three barbed wire fences and through some 10" tall grass, which we circumvented on the return. Couldn't find a use trail, nor the fire break; guess everything is too overgrown. We headed straight up the side of the first bump; lots of bushes, but enough clear areas, so virtually no bush whacking at all. Once on the ridge line, there were some ducks--one rock on a downed log or one rock on a boulder. We added rocks and ducks along the way; trekked over two bumps and the landed on the third one--Hawes--where there was a can, pencil and tablet. Nice views from the top. The best thing was that we didn't hear one gun shot all day--yea!
