Ascent Trip Report

This was another private desert peak trip made possible by Harry's ready access to commercial gas ration stamps. With me stretched out in the back of Harry's truck, five of us left town about 6:00P last night, headed over Cajon Pass, had dinner at Barstow, and slept off the road outside Las Vegas. This morning we were at the South Loop TH in Kyle Canyon by 8:15A and on our way up the well graded, steep trail on the eastern scarp of the Spring Mountains. At the crest (10,700') the trail heads through meadows and Bristlecone pine before climbing above timberline to the barren upper slopes. We thought we were going to top out at about 12:30P, but had to pass a false bump before reaching the top at 1:20P. It was cold and windy, though clear; so we quickly ate a bite of lunch, snapped a couple of pictures and left. We signed our names on a paper sack, which we left in the rocks. We were back at Harry's truck by 5:30P and soon headed for home, stopping outside Barstow for the night.
