Ascent Trip ReportA 20 mile knee-buster with 4000 feet of gain, starting from Mt. Hamilton Road in Grant Park. On the way up I was feeling good and accidentally bypassed Antler Point on my way up to the slightly lower point a little past it. Should I go back for Antler Point now, adding 0.4 miles, or get it on the way back? I decided to get it on the way back, occasioning a 400' vertical slog in the heat when I was dead tired.
I saw my first coyote ever shortly after starting out. No humans all day.
It might be worth checking if a shorter approach is possible by starting in Blue Oak Ranch Reserve, which is part of the University of California. On their Web site you can apply for a permit, and it looks like hiking might be an approved use. You'd likely have to conceal the desire to hop fences into neighboring ranches.
