Ascent Trip Report

Richard Barnes, one of our Cal Prep teachers, drove seven of us to the entrance to Sisar Canyon on CA 150 in the Upper Ojai. We started up the fire road about 4:00PM, then by trail on F21W08 to camp at White Ledge C.G. After a lengthy preparation (stew and fried spuds), we ate our hearty but simple meal around the stove, shooting the breeze before turning into our warm sleeping bags (cold night). While the others remained in camp with no intention of climbing Hines Peak, Bob Becker and I left before sunrise. We continued up the trail to the Nordhoff Ridge Road on the Topatopa Ridge and topped out by 8:00AM on what we thought might be Hines Peak. We quickly realized that this summit (Pk 6440') was not Hines after all and that our goal was still some distance off to the east. We enjoyed a beautiful sunrise en route with Baldy and Grayback in the distance and a sea of fog below. We had big trouble finding an open route over to Hines and had to go up-and-down, cross-country with lots of slow-going and heavy-duty bushwhacking. Finally, after scrambling up the final steep slope, we reached our summit around 11:00AM. We signed the register and then hunkered down out of the strong, cold wind for a leisurely lunch of tuna, canned milk, and fruit. The visibility remained excellent above the persistent fog at the lower levels. We took a different return route from our cross-country approach, and, although we couldn’t avoid some bushwhacking, connected with a poorly maintained trail that took us to the Nordhoff Ridge Road and the Sisar Canyon trail down to rejoin our gang at White Ledge, now fogged in. Another hearty dinner and conversation around the stove. Sunday morning, after a huge breakfast of mush, eggs, bacon, spuds, and coffee, Dave, Skip, and I headed back to school by hiking up to the Nordhoff Ridge Road, following it under Big Chief to Nordhoff Peak, then down the Pratt Canyon trail (23W09) to North Foothill Road and our school, arriving at 5:30PM after a long hike with packs. The others had hitched a ride back.
